Indore: In view of the fact that high excise duty is dissuading manufacturers from using the dry port in Indore, the Central Board of Excise and Customs is reported to be considering lowering the duty.
A section of manufactures and companies dealing in export-import had taken up the issue of lowering custom duty. According to highly placed sources, the from the companies as the port has already completed five years without much revenue accruing to it.
Miliand Mahajan, director, GACC, said he would welcome lowering duty by the CBEC. By doing so, the board could expect to generate more revenues. Due to heavy duty and additional cost only a few companies are using the dry port's facility here. A large number of companies exporting perishable items with limited expiry period prefer other ports in the country.
According to Pithampur industrial association president Gautum Kothari, MP has the first operational SEZ at Pithampur . It has all the benefits of investing in SEZ except that manufacturers have to bear extra burden of customs department in using the dry port.
Only Ranbaxy and Tata International companies are using this air cargo facility in Indore.
Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) ensures that taxes on foreign and inland travel are administered as per law and the collection agencies deposit the taxes collected to the public exchequer promptly.
