More than a third of fruit and veg exported

A total of 38% of all Portuguese fruit, vegetables and flowers are exported Manuel Évora, President of Portugal Fresh, revealed to the Lusa News Agency.
Évora was speaking at an awareness raising event in Lisbon that was also highlighting how Portugal had been chosen as the official partner of the 2015 Fruit Logistics fair, the largest for this sector and held in Berlin next February.
The Portugal Fresh President was bullish on both fronts not only emphasising how that 38% export total represented national revenues of around €2.6 billion, up 26% over the last three years, with its appointment as the official partner representing “a historical day for Portuguese agriculture” given the fair attracts 65,000 visitors from 141 countries.
Minister of Agriculture and the Sea Assunção Cristas was also on hand to praise the sector and the scope for the agriculture sector to continue building on its achievements.
Cristas said that while there was room for growth in fruit and vegetable exports to Germany and Europe, the sector had already begun looking elsewhere.
The agriculture minister added that while Germany accounted for €18 million in agricultural exports, Brazil already took €40 million worth of exports with an accreditation process currently at an advanced stage to open Japan up to Portuguese cherry exports.
