A Major Opportunity For PC Makers

Personal Computers are a crucial necessity in developing countries for people of various income groups nowadays. As governments increasingly adopt more efficient technologies to organize and manage, this becomes truer for lower-income groups.

The market looks especially promising in India, where a growing middle class is moving towards digitization. Desktops and laptops had already reached peak popularity in 2015 due to these reasons.

Industry data showed that laptop sales rose from 40,000 units n 2016 to a whopping one million in 2022. Yet a huge portion of the potential market still doesn’t have a computer today.

Growth During the Pandemic

Demand ramped up once again during the pandemic in 2021. As more people started working from flexible places, sales shot up through the roof. Growing opportunities in the digital space have become more mainstream, and uncertainty about the future has arisen after the pandemic.

Mixed with environmental concerns over unstable weather and global political unrest, the situation promotes remote work and self-employment even further. That means higher demand for personal computers as well.

A Short-Term Plunge

January to March 2023 saw quite a drop in sales due to slowing demand in both the consumer and commercial sectors. The demand for desktops was considerable, but the notebook and tablet sectors suffered a steep decline.

The lower demand can be attributed to various reasons, like market saturation, elevated inventory levels, and inflation.

Top Players of Q1 2023

  1. HP: Leading with a 37.53% market share. With strong demand from offline channels and a sizeable portion of government and education sector orders.
  2. Lenovo: A 15.7% market share, marginally behind Dell. The company struggled with commissioning public orders, despite the quarter being dominated by government orders.
  3. Dell: 13.9% market share. Suffered from a lack of corporate orders as the company is largely targeted to that clientele. They focused on the consumer and SME sectors.
  4. Acer: A 12.3% market share. Acer did fairly well in the government and education sectors.
  5. ASUS: 6.6% market share. Largely focused on the domestic consumer sector, mainly in the notebook/laptop category.

The Booming Gaming PC Sector

Year-on-year sales of PCs fell by about 30% in Q1 2023, but experts are hopeful for the latter part of the year. The gaming PC sector saw sharp growth in the same period, following its upward trend of the past year. 68% of gamers in India view PC as the superior platform, and companies are investing heavily in this opportunity.

Executives from HP have spoken extensively about the growing demand for these products. The company has also launched its latest range of Victus and Omen gaming laptops. PC makers are already priming up for the Diwali season as sales are expected to break records this year.
