NEW DELHI: Market leader Samsung lost almost seven percentage points of its smartphone market share in India in the quarter to June, mainly due to stiff competition from local and Chinese players that have aggressive pricing strategies, according to a report by analytics and import data tracking firm Cybex Exim Solutions.

Samsung's smartphone market share fell to 21.5% from 28% in the previous quarter, the report said. The company, however, still leads the overall handset market in the country with 18.9% share.

Home-bred handset maker Micromax is going steady on the No.2 position, with 12.6% share of the overall mobile phone market in the quarter to June, up from 10% in the previous quarter. In the smartphone segment, Micromax's market share rose to 17.9% from 13%.

During the quarter, Micromax manufactured 2.5 million smartphones in the country, up from 0.7 million, accounting for more than 50% of its smartphones portfolio, Cybex said.

Cybex used the import data of completely built units (CBU) of mobile phones as well that of domestic manufacturing and assembling to compile the report. The CBU figures were based on actual imports of mobile handsets into India, while the domestic manufacturing figures were obtained from imports of a key component used in mobile phone manufacturing.

According to the report, another home-bred handset firm Intex secured the third spot with 10.2% of the smartphone market share in the quarter. It sold over 2.5 million smartphone units during the quarter, garnering 9.6% share of the overall mobile phone market during the quarter.

Chinese handset maker Lenovo, which has acquired Motorola, was in the fourth position in the smartphone segment with 7.6% of the market share. Cybex said Lenovo's A6000 and A6000-Plus smartphone models did well to put Lenovo marginally ahead of Lava.

Lava International and its sub-brand Xolo slipped to the fifth position from fourth position in the smartphone segment during the quarter, with 7% of the market share. However, it secured the fourth position in the overall mobile phone market by capturing 8.2% of the market.
